Understanding Cambodia Visa Rules
Cambodia has become an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, drawn by its low cost of living, warm climate, and the vibrant expat communities in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. The visa system is straightforward but has important distinctions that affect how long you can stay.
Tourist Visa – T Class (30 Days)
The tourist visa is the most common entry option. It costs $30 USD and is available on arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, and most land border crossings. You'll need a passport with at least 6 months validity, one passport photo, and the fee in US dollars. The visa grants 30 days from the date of entry.
The tourist visa can be extended once for an additional 30 days at the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh. Many travel agents and guesthouses across Cambodia offer visa extension services for approximately $45 USD. After the extension expires, you must leave Cambodia — the tourist visa cannot be further extended or converted to another visa type.
E-Visa (30 Days)
Cambodia's e-visa system allows you to apply online at evisa.gov.kh before your trip. The e-visa costs $36 USD ($30 visa fee + $6 processing fee) and is processed within 3 business days. It grants the same 30-day stay as the tourist visa on arrival. The e-visa is accepted at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports and select land borders (Bavet, Cham Yeam, and Poi Pet). It can also be extended for 30 days at immigration.
Ordinary Visa – E Class (30 Days, Extendable)
The ordinary visa costs $35 USD on arrival and also grants 30 days initially. However, unlike the tourist visa, it can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. It can also be converted into a business visa (EB extension) for those who want to work or stay long-term. Digital nomads planning to stay beyond 60 days should opt for the ordinary visa instead of the tourist visa.
To extend an ordinary visa, you'll need a sponsor (which visa agents can provide) and the appropriate fees. A 12-month EB extension typically costs $280-$350 USD through an agent. This is the most popular long-term option for digital nomads and expats in Cambodia.
Overstay Penalties
Cambodia charges $10 USD per day for overstays. While this may seem modest compared to Thailand's penalties, overstays beyond 30 days can lead to complications at immigration, including being escorted to the local immigration office and longer processing times on departure. Extended overstays of several months may result in detention. Always ensure your visa is valid before your departure date.
Popular Nomad Cities in Cambodia
Phnom Penh is the administrative capital and the best city for visa processing, banking, and business. It has a growing number of coworking spaces, cafes with fast WiFi, and an active expat community. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment starts from $250-$400/month.
Siem Reap is home to Angkor Wat and has a more relaxed, tourist-oriented atmosphere. It's cheaper than Phnom Penh, with studio apartments from $150-$250/month. The nomad community is smaller but growing.
Kampot and Kep in the south are popular among nomads seeking a quiet, beach-adjacent lifestyle. Costs are very low, but internet infrastructure can be less reliable than in the capital.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I stay in Cambodia on a tourist visa?▾
A Cambodia tourist visa (T class) grants 30 days from the date of entry. It can be extended once for an additional 30 days at the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh, giving you a maximum of 60 days. The tourist visa costs $30 USD and is available on arrival at airports and land borders.
What is the Cambodia e-visa and how does it work?▾
The Cambodia e-visa is an electronic tourist visa applied for online at evisa.gov.kh before travel. It costs $36 USD ($30 visa fee + $6 processing fee) and grants the same 30-day stay as the visa on arrival. The e-visa is accepted at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports and certain land borders, but not all. Processing typically takes 3 business days.
What are the overstay penalties in Cambodia?▾
Cambodia charges $10 USD per day for overstays. If you overstay by more than 30 days, you may face additional complications including a visit to the immigration office, a fine, and potentially being escorted to the border. Overstays exceeding several months can result in detention and deportation. It's strongly advised to track your dates carefully.
Can I extend my Cambodia tourist visa?▾
Yes, the tourist visa can be extended once for 30 days at the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh. The extension costs approximately $45 USD if done through an agent (the official fee is lower). You need to apply before your current visa expires. Many guesthouses and travel agents in Phnom Penh can handle the process for you.
What is the difference between a tourist visa and an ordinary visa in Cambodia?▾
The tourist visa (T class, $30 USD) allows 30 days and can only be extended once for 30 more days. The ordinary visa (E class, $35 USD) also grants 30 days initially but can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months, and can be converted into a long-term business visa. Digital nomads planning longer stays typically choose the ordinary visa for its flexibility.
Can I work remotely in Cambodia on a tourist visa?▾
Technically, working in Cambodia requires a work permit and business visa. However, many digital nomads work remotely on tourist or ordinary visas. Cambodia is generally relaxed about remote workers, but for legal compliance, the ordinary visa (E class) with an EB (business) extension is the proper route. There is no dedicated digital nomad visa yet.
